Golfers take 2nd in Tournament #3
Baseball team gets redemption with shutout win over Sac City
Men’s golf
Just three tournaments into the Big 8 schedule, and it’s already clearly a two-team race. The Falcons finished second behind Napa Valley on Wednesday at Chardonnay Golf Club in Napa, and the two teams have now alternated spots through the first three tournaments. This time the Falcons shot a team score of 392 and finished 8 strokes behind Napa Valley, who had the advantage of playing on their home course. With three players scoring in the 70’s and two more right at 80, it was a marked improvement for the defending Big 8 champs. Freshman Noah Woehler again led the team with his 76, while Nathan Jetton and Sam Irvin followed with 77 and 79, respectively.

Baseball
Perhaps it was the change of venue, or maybe playing at night, but whatever it was, the difference in results could not have been more profound. The Falcons traveled down to Sacramento on Thursday evening for the second game of their three-game series with Sac City and this time won a classic pitcher’s duel, 3-0. Sophomore lefty Trevor Johnson (6 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs) and freshman lefty Skylar Wells (4 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks, 6 strikeouts) combined for a three-hit shutout as the Falcons evened the series at a game apiece. It was a remarkable turnaround from Tuesday’s debacle, but showed that this Falcon team is capable of beating anyone. While the offense mustered just four hits in the game, the Falcons got the right hit at the right time when centerfielder Austin Caviness singled home Kellar Edwards in the eighth inning with the game’s first run. It was the only hit of the inning, but followed two crucial walks that put Edwards in scoring position. Up 2-0 in the ninth, the Falcons added an insurance run when Hunter Dunithan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Wells then finished off the Panthers with an easy 1-2-3 bottom half of the ninth. The Falcons evened their Big 8 record at 1-1 and are now 12-4 overall.
Starter Trevor Johnson was impressive on Thursday, blanking the Panthers on two hits over six innings
The series finale is on Friday at “the Lake” at 5:00 pm.
