Bulldogs Win Squeaker Over Rival Cougars

Baseball completed the first round of Western State Conference play with a loss to local rival Allan Hancock, 6-5. The Cougars beat the Bulldogs in Santa Maria yesterday, 9-6, but were unable to defend their home field today. The two teams were tied, 3-3, after seven innings, but the Bulldogs tacked on three more in the 8th inning. The Cougars used three pitchers in the frame as six consecutive Bulldogs reached safely and bookended by a pair of strikeouts. Cuesta answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and both team were scoreless in the ninth. Righthander Connor Davis took the loss for the Cougars, despite recording his first career double-digit strikeout game. Davis punched out ten Bulldogs, but was also saddled with the loss. Third Baseman Mason Grotto led the Cougars' offense. He was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a walk. Centerfielder Chandler Hughes also enjoyed a multi-hit game. He was 2-for-5 and added a walk and a stolen base. The Cougars are 15-13 on the year and 4-6 against the WSC. They host current loop leader Moorpark on Thursday (2:30)
